Parent Mentor for Special Programs

The Parent Mentor is a parent of a child with a disability employed to serve as a resource to students receiving special education services, their families, and teachers. This position is part of a new program headed up by the Georgia Department of Education called the Georgia Mentor Project. The Parent Mentor can assist special education parents by understanding the special education process and can provide information to assist in IEP planning and preparation. The mentor can provide a parent’s perspective to educators, provide resources within and outside the school system, hold training programs on topics parents have requested and listen to parents and understand their concerns and issues.
