Cartersville High School:
Joseph Stegall - Cross Country Runner of the Month.
GCA: Senior, Joseph Stegall was selected as the Runner-of-the-Month for September by the Georgia Coaches Association. Joseph is undefeated through five (5) AA meets, and has won several prestigious invitationals including: The Berry Invitational, The Carrollton Invitation, and The Ridge Ferry Invitational. He is ranked #1 State AA Cross Country competition. On October 5th, he competed in the most competitive Cross Country race in the nation--The Vulcan Classic in Birmingham--placing 6th in a field of 200 athletics from around the country. He is currently ranked 7/154 of his senior class with a GPA of 95.725. Joseph is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lint Stegall and brother of CHS graduate Sidney Stegall, Captain of the Georgia Tech Menıs Cross Country Team.
Commended Students
National Merit Scholarship Program: Rebecca Bennet, John Bumgarner, Rachel Greene and Marci Leonard. These students will not continue in competition for Merit Scholarships; however, they did place among the top five percent of more than one million students in the 1995 PSAT/National Merit Qualifying Test where they demonstrated outstanding academic potential.
Semi Finalist - National Merit Scholarship Competition: Andrew Stein, Senior - Son of Ben and Iris Stein.
Semifinalist are identified by scoring exceptional high on the PSAT. They represent the top 1/2 of 1% of the seniors nationally. About 14,000 semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level of the 1997 competition. All winners of approximately 7,000 Merit Scholarship awards, worth about $27 million, will be chosen from this group of exceptionally able young people. Winners will be announced in April and May 1997.

Committee Recommendations
Finance Committee, Mr. Jim Kennedy, Jr., Chrm. Approved recommendation amending the FY97 Budget to show receipt of funds and authorize expenditure for $5,000 Children & Youth Coordinating Council, In-School Probation Grant for CMS.
Personnel Recommendations
Approved the Superintendentıs recommendation of the certified employment of those individuals listed below for the 1996-97 school year, with such employment initially being temporary until such time as their criminal record check is completed and the report is satisfactory to the Superintendent, pending required professional certification and pending release of contract: Mr. Mark Shelton Perry, CHS Teacher; and the re-instatement of Ms. Catherine Romano, 1996-97 employment contract as a CES Teacher.
