Stellar Performers

Cartersville High School:

Outstanding Educator:

Georgia Hough, Social Studies teacher at CHS, is commended for instructing her students in the process of American democracy as it relates to the political system. She arranged political forums with candidates so that CHS students were able to ask questions and discuss issues of concern. Eighty-five eligible students were registered to vote and were transported to the polls on November 4, 1997 to vote for the candidate of their choice. Other students in Ms. Hough's classes, not eligible to vote, were transported to the Cartersville Civic Center to observe the voting process. Ms. Hough's students also had the opportunity to travel to Cass High School in November to hear Bob Barr.

Article Published by CHS Instructor:

Ms. Shirley Weston, Technology Instructor at CHS, is commended for having an article published in the September 1997 edition of The Technology Teacher. Ms. Weston's article, "Teacher Shortage--Supply and Demand", was written while she was a graduate student and teaching candidate in the Technology Education Program at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. This is Ms. Weston's first year at CHS and her first year as a teacher. Ms. Weston was previously affiliated with the U.S. Navy.

Outstanding 20th Century World History Students:

CHS Social Studies Teacher, Ms. Connie McLendon recommended that the following students be recognized for their participation and contribution to a unit on the Holocaust: Ryan Sidlow; Mandy Gephart; Drew Startup; Matthew Gambill; Amiee Hess; Chris Taylor; Meghan Young; Tina Fowler; and Tiffany Cox. As a final activity for this unit, the students viewed the film Shindler's List and were asked to note one image that symbolized the entire film and explain why they chose that master image. Ms. McLendon noted that the written responses of these students were completed in an exceptional manner.

CHS Students Helping the Needy:

The following CHS students collected approximately 3000 items of food, household goods and toys which they divided between the children's emergency shelter, Flowering Branch and The Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter: Nick Parr; Tara Landers; Wayne Highfield; Sabrina Craven; Candance Harris; and Amanda Banks. These students are enrolled in Ms. Georgia Hough's Government/Economics Class and initiated, on their own, this project as the results of a class assignment that required observation of government agencies or volunteering in the community.

-Mr. James D. Kennedy, Jr., School Board Member, term ending December 31, 1997. Presentation of Board's Resolution and gift honoring Mr. Kennedy's seven years of Board service to the children of the Cartersville City Schools.

-Congratulations to the Cartersville City Schools Business Office for earning its first Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the year ended June 30, 1996. The GFOA Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. Only a few school systems in Georgia can qualify for this certificate, all other systems do not qualify primarily because they do not have a fixed asset accounting system that meets GFOA requirements or for other non-compliance reasons. The Cartersville City School System has worked three years toward earning this certificate and expresses its appreciation to the School Business Office Personnel and auditors of Williamson & Company, who did the work; and appreciation is expressed to Mr. James D. Kennedy, Jr. and members of the Cartersville School Board Finance Committee in setting the challenge before us to reach this goal.
