Testing at CHS

Standardized Tests

Several different standardized tests are administered at Cartersville High School during the school year.  A description of each test is provided below.

PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test)

The PSAT is essentially a practice test for taking the SAT.  The PSAT may provide important information concerning a student's individual weaknesses, which can be remediated before he/she takes the SAT.  The PSAT is given to all freshman and sophomore students free-of-charge.  College bound students are encouraged to take the PSAT again during the junior year.  The cost of the PSAT is approximately $13.00 for juniors.  Eleventh grade students must sign up for the PSAT in the Guidance Office.  The PSAT is administered only ONCE during the school year.  Don't miss it this October.  Those students who are seeking to participate in the National Merit Scholarship competition must take the PSAT in the junior year.  It is also a required part of the Governor's Honors Program evaluation criteria.

Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT)

All students seeking a Georgia High School Diploma must pass the Georgia High School Writing Test (GHSWT).

Students in the classes of 2012, 2013, 2014 must pass either Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) or an EOCT in each of the four academic areas (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies).

End-of-Course-Tests

- Students will take End-of-Course-Tests in the following subjects:

College Entrance Exams

The SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT is required of all students planning to enter a college or university.  Some universities also require the SAT Subject Tests.  Students should check the admission requirements for particular colleges.  Generally, most students first take the SAT or ACT their junior year, but there are exceptions.  We recommend that students take the SAT or ACT once or twice during their junior year and again during the fall of the senior year.   The best way to prepare for these tests is to take rigorous courses in high school.

SAT I (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

The SAT Reasoning Test measures critical reading, math, and writing skills. For more information or to register for the SAT Reasoning Tests or SAT Subject Tests visit www.collegeboard.com.

ACT

The ACT consists of tests in the areas of English, Mathematics, Reading, Science Reasoning and an optional writing test. The ACT is given at Cartersville High School in February.  For more information or to register for the ACT, visit www.act.org.

Other Tests

AP Exams (Advanced Placement)

AP exams are rigorous standardized exams produced by The College Board. Students who take an AP course have the option to take the AP exam in that subject area.  AP courses are taught at a college level.  AP exam scores range from 2 to 5.  Most colleges and universities give college credit for scores of 3 to 5 on an AP exam.
